Nexus 4: the problems begin with the fragile glass back

Nexus 4: the problems begin with the fragile glass back

Google, the new Nexus 4, showed the world that, after the Nexus One which has laid the foundation for all high-end devices that are there today, and was able to again raise the bar of hardware specifications and also the quality of construction of its smartphones. The Nexus 4, unlike the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, and made with glass on both the front and rear, a solution that initially is not liked by many because it is very similar to that used by Apple with the iPhone 4 and 4s and that made more fragile the device.

Now, however, some users who are in possession of the Nexus 4 – including some of our fellow writers at various blogs Android foreigners – reported that the rear window of the Nexus 4 is very fragile, perhaps more than we expected although it is a glass Gorilla Glass 2, which normally should be the resistance his winning ace.

Colleagues from Droid Life and TheVerge report in fact excessive propensity of the rear window of the Nexus 4 to break even when you accidentally drop your smartphone. Joshua Topolsky of TheVerge says that the glass of his Nexus 4 is damaged and when, to his carelessness, the smartphone and slipped off the table where he was having dinner falling on a wooden floor, a material that absorbs certainly more impact than ceramics or asphalt. Despite this, the rear window of his Nexus 4 and it damaged too and here is the picture that shows what I have just said.

So, how is it possible that Google and LG have not been aware of the fragility of the glass back of the Nexus 4? In any case, continue with the testimony of another of our colleague, Kellex from Droid Life, which contains a rather strange event. In fact, and enough just dropping the Nexus 4 on a surface at room temperature to obtain this result:

There's no denying it, and a very considerable damage if one takes into account the fact that the Nexus 4 Kellex has never crashed even once and has always been used with great care.

So, what's due and all that? There should also be added that the same kind of problem and also occurred with the new LG Optimus G, the twin non-Nexus Nexus 4, however, also made with the same materials. And initially thought that the problem could be the slight convexity of the rear window of the Nexus 4, which, under proper stress (thermal or mechanical), yields inexorably. If, however, the problem would also be present sull'Optimus G concave or convex glass does not, then we discard this hypothesis.

Most likely, therefore, it is a very thin glass rear, perhaps more than necessary, which then breaks under the right stress; however we believe that this problem is relegated to only the first specimens of Nexus 4 and Optimus G. Among other things must be taken into consideration the fact that, immediately below the rear glass, are present NFC, antennas and mechanism for wireless charging, all components that require that the rear glass is solid and not brittle. For this we can assume that the problem of fragile glass is due only to the first production models.

In addition, since both smartphones will surely record sales as we already said in the light of the continuing Sold-Out on Play Store Devices, in case there were problems back glass LG and Google will not have many problems in the repair under warranty devices.

Finally, if you were able to grab a Nexus 4, you can inform us and post a question on our Forum as it appears actually the back window of the smartphone, and if during those first days of use you have a problem like that.

One Response to Nexus 4: the problems begin with the fragile glass back

  1. TheThrowdest says:

I have had mine 3 days. There were no cases at all for sale at the T-Mobile store. I found some great deals on eBay but that’s not the point, I don’t have the cases ordered yet I bent over with the Nexus 4 in my shirt pocket and it fell out on smooth concrete no gravel and the back is ruined and the front is shattered in the corner. Back glass isn’t the same as the front and they should let people opt to get ones with the glass back replaced. TBH if I had known how fragile it is and that I wouldn’t be able to get a case for a week i would have bought the Note 2 or waited for the Galaxy S4. Phone works great though and when I get the cases the damage shouldn’t be noticeable. Also I called LG & T-Mobile LG said they would fix it for about 140 Tmobile said 135 with my insurance, not much point in having insurance it seems because 9/10 of claims would be for broken glass I’m gonna cancel the insurance and save the $8 a month.
